"I'm Fine"

The greatest lie of all. Not that we actually wish to fool anyone, but just because it's easier. It's easier than explaining why your chest feels so heavy. This helps to keep our thoughts to ourselves and not cause further trouble to others, but this slowly breaks us apart.
It's easier than trying to put things into words and thoughts that you don't understand. It is easier than risking being exposed too clearly. In everyday situations, people learn how to wear a mask when interacting with others. They smile when they're supposed to, not when they truly feel like it. They laugh at jokes when surrounded by those who do the same and keep following along as if nothing is wrong. Externally, everything is fine. Internally, though, all sorts of states may be overwhelmed. This could manifest as being totally burnt out or being detached from reality. Some people seem to carry around their own internal hum of anxiety, and others feel this void, that constant emptiness, but keep on performing like nothing is wrong.
There are many reasons why people hide their inner selves, but one of the largest reasons is not wanting to appear weak and a burden to others. Our society highly values being strong and independent, but it does not make any room for authenticity. Consequently, individuals convince themselves that their personal issues are irrelevant or difficult for others to handle. Thus, they choose to shove their feelings away, which, while seemingly practical for a limited time, often results in horrible effects like anger and instability. Or you can burn out and feel physically exhausted. Hidden feelings stay there, waiting. Holding them in just makes it harder to recognize and handle them later. It's healthier to say how you feel than to keep it inside.
Even a short chat with someone you trust can help you a lot. For example, good friends can give comfort and understanding whenever you're struggling. Just make sure to admit when you need help. Saying it out loud reminds you you're not alone. It takes some of the weight off. Try other ways to let off steam, too. Write things down. Take time to reflect on what you truly feel.
Don't compare your feelings to others. Make sure to accept them as they are. Everyone has troubles. Their feelings might want to be heard. Most of the time, it's easier to say "I'm fine" than to lose touch with yourself and the help you need. It might be uncomfortable to show how you really feel, but being open helps you heal and makes things clearer. You don’t need to carry everything alone. You don't have to keep telling yourself and others that you're fine. Life is not a game of charades to act out as someone you are not.
